Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is said to be the greatest fortress built by the Spaniards in the New World. It was originally constructed in 1536 and was expanded in 1657 and again in 1763. The fort's position on top of San Lazaro Hill allowed invaders to be seen if they were coming by land or sea. It was attacked many times, but was penetrated only once, in 1697 by French privateer Baron de Pointis and his buccaneers.
