Colombia's Flag

The Colombian flag was adopted in 1861 and is made up of 3 horizontal stripes: yellow, blue, and red. The yellow stripe takes up the top half of the flag, while the blue and red stripes split the bottom half.

Here are two interpretations of the colors:
1. Yellow = the gold in Colombia's land, blue = the seas on its shores, red = the blood spilled in attaining freedom
2. Yellow = sovereignty and justice, blue = loyalty and vigilance, red = valor and generosity

Venezuela and Ecuador use the same colors in their flags. Along with Colombia, they were once a part of Gran Colombia, a short-lived republic made up of several areas that had gained their independence from Spain. The republic lasted from 1819 to 1831.
