Yesterday Scott and I went into the old city for a date night. We walked around a bit and went into a few local artisan shops. The shopping area of the city is interesting because for the most part, each block sells the same thing. So, one block is mostly shoe shops, the next block is mostly clothing shops, the next block is mostly fabric shops, etc. I wonder how people decide which shops to buy from.
We went to dinner at one of the famous seafood restaurants, Cafe San Pedro. It has a kind of Caribbean/Asian fusion cuisine and it was so good! We started with one of the most popular drinks here, limonada de coco (limeade with coconut milk). Then we shared a Caribbean dumpling appetizer (dumplings with black beans and an Asian sauce). For entrees I ordered the grilled fish with cilantro pesto over stir-fried vegetables and Scott ordered the szechuan fish over potato puree.
For dessert, we had originally planned on heading over to the bakery that Scott had found on his trip here in March. He claims it has the best tres leches cake he's ever had. But when we were walking around the city before dinner, we walked past the bakery and saw a sign in the window that said it was closed and for sale. Darn. We were too full to eat dessert at Cafe San Pedro, so we decided to head over to the Portal de los Dulces and grab some sweets to take home. The strange thing about the Portal de los Dulces is that each of the vendors sells the exact same sweets. Even though the cocadas that we bought last time were really good, we decided to buy from another vendor to see if there was any difference. As soon as we picked our sweets from this vendor, we immediately regretted it because she was the grouchiest lady. She sloooowwly got us our cocadas out of the jar, mumbled something when I asked her the price, then didn't say anything when I handed her the coins...she just stood there examining them. When we got home and tasted the cocadas, they were super nasty...they almost tasted like they were cooked in bacon fat or grease or something. Yuck. From now on we will only be buying from the vendor we bought from the first time.
