AC Unit Maintenance

Since it gets so hot here during the day, I'm glad that we have air conditioning. Each room has at least one unit on the wall, with a remote control to turn it on/off and to set the temperature and air speed. Most of the time most of them work fine, but sometimes, for reasons that only they know, they will decide to do their own thing. This means they either: barely blow out any cold air, make really loud noises, or start leaking. The last one is the worst, because the water drips down the wall and/or onto anything you have below the unit.

When my friend Justin was here visiting, we were sitting on the couch and all of the sudden heard this loud whoooooosh sound. One of the units just spewed out a waterfall and I had to turn it off. Every few months, a group of guys comes to do "maintenance" on the units...I'm not really sure what they actually do besides clean them because they never work any better after the guys leave (and sometimes ones that worked fine before the maintenance don't work so well after). When I told the guys about the waterfall, they turned that particular unit back on, looked at it for a few minutes, and informed me that there was no water coming out. Sigh. Apparently leaky AC units is a common problem here.

Anyways, at the crack of dawn on Sunday morning, Scott and I awoke to a loud crash-like sound. We were like, great, what broke now? We walked all around the apartment and didn't see anything that had fallen off the wall or any marble/cabinets that had cracked, so we couldn't figure out what the noise had been. Then I heard a dripping sound coming from my craft room. It turns out that the AC unit in there had not only let out a bunch of water, but also chunks of ice. The maintenance guys are coming on Friday, though I doubt they will know what was causing the problem...
